I fumble along the dark floorboards of the rental car seeking a CD among those that I grabbed on the way out the door.
I come up with Greendale by Neil Young and Crazy Horse. I’d picked it up at Goodwill awhile back and had been meaning to listen to it. It was on a pile by the computer, waiting to be ripped and uploaded to my Google Play library. The rental has a CD player and I have a four hour drive. I’m heading up to Laurelville PA for the Anabaptist Communicators Retreat.
Falling From Above comes on and as usual it is serendipitous.

It seems a fitting adage for an Anabaptist Communicator, of which I hope I am both. Social media is an important tool in the work, but I must not lose sight of the vision or the roots undergirding what I do. Has social media drawn me closer to people or served as an escape from relationship?
Has it increased my love and affection towards others or is it simply one more distraction from real connection?
What values, if any, am I communicating through my online presence and is my “real” life consistent with my virtual life?
I don’t know, but these seem to be good questions to be thinking about on the cusp of said retreat. They are questions that are not answered in one sitting, but rather can serve as ongoing guides.
Like an old song thumping in an adopted car on a late night highway.
