review 1: Enough of a disappointment that I considered a two-star rating. Offers some interesting ideas (or in some cases expands upon ideas already in the air); e.g., about the collapse of time and narrative, and about fragmentation of attention. The expositions tend to have a grab-bag feel. They also sometimes get swamped by whatever buzzwords Rushkoff wants to sell in that chapter.The surprise that will leave some readers thinking "Really?" time and again is his penchant for sweeping historical pronouncements that veer from dubious to ludicrous. Can medieval and early Renaissance history be explained by the adoption of central currency (to the extent that such existed)? Did the Enlightenment spring from London's coffee houses? And so on, in a succession that at least provides a p... moreeripheral amusement when the general going gets a little disorganized.Might mention that Rushkoff's "narrative collapse" could be considered a reversion instead of a new development: see The Cognitive Revolution in Western Culture, by Don LePan.
review 2: A little disorienting in it's scope as well as topic, but very interesting.I was introduced to some topics I'd never considered or heard of before (Such as centralized currency, some effects it has on economies and cultures, and possible alternatives), and that was very stimulating. It also gave me a possible answer to my question "Why the heck are zombies so popular?"Sometimes I wasn't sure where he was getting his ideas, as there were annotations for some things, but not others that seemed to need support. At least there is a Notes section and a Bibliography.All in all, very thought provoking. less
