review 1: Alan Davis' work has never looked better, a reminder that when paired with an inker who is NOT Mark Farmer it just cannot compare. Ed Brubaker continues to write exciting Captain America stories, but this one falters a little. Though there's nothing that's inherently wrong with this storyline, it just seems to be missing an extra plot twist or a real A-HA moment. Why was the mad-bomb set exactly? For what purpose did Cap need to lose his powers? And when he lost his serum-enhanced abilities, why was he also not reverted back to his true age like has been done so in so many previous stories? There was a terrific collection of secondary characters (Machinesmith, Serpent Squad, Zemo & Bravo) and Sharon Carter and Falcon continue to shine, but when it's all said and done we're... more kind of left thinking what the whole point was. But maybe we've just been spoiled by so many stellar Brubaker/Cap stories of late.
review 2: These tail-end Captain America stories by Brubaker are not his finest works on the character or title. I don't know if Brubaker took on too many writing assignments or if he just lost interest, but one of the neat things about his writing C.A. was the sense of realism he and his artists commanded early on. That is, his many years on C.A. was more an espionage, war book than superhero. This time round, he plays homage to Jack Kirby's "Mad bomb" story and it reads badly because of his questionable or hooky use of dialogue. Sure, it all right when Kirby did it many decades ago...nowadays not so much. Today's artists draw things with ultra realistic flair, the goofy dialogue Stan Lee or Jack Kirby wrote worked because the books looked like cartoons. Perhaps reading this book after Kirby's "Mad bob" is an okay thing, but comparing this effort to his earlier work, it simply pales. less
