review 1: This is a (highly) sweet, light read and while I love the characters I also felt a little disappointed.Otis is adorable, chubby, hairy geek who doesn't diet, shave and become a prince but gets loved for who he is. Also no angst! While Otis is lonely and feels down over his percieved unattractiveness he doesn't try to change, I loved the scene where he's dressing to get ready and he decides to go as himself, and the deleting of his fake profile. His arrival at the acrcade had me grinning, he's a sociable guy and better liked than he realises.I could happily read more Otis. Garret comes across as too perfect. Handsome, charming, intelligent, big GBLT friendly family. A true prince charming. For all the long talks of seeing beyond appearances it felt he was ticking off ... morecriteria and the chemistry between the two doesn't zing off the page for me.The first shopping trip was a step too far, we didn't really need to be reading poetical quality control of the veggies considering the length of of the story. There was a lot of bumpf and it messes the pacing up.It's a sweet easy read but doesn't stand out as special.
review 2: Well. All I can say is that this story left me with a smile in my heart. Loved it! Love that Garret saw so much more than skin deep in Otis, and that Otis got someone that appreciated him for all that he has to offer. Oh, to find the same in our lives. This felt like a story with real people, and I appreciated, with the way so many m/m stories lead with gym perfect, 'hot' guys, that this short story had a ring of authenticty to it. It was a breath of fresh air, and gives me hope that there are matches for all of us... I also liked that Otis tended to gear himself up for big events with a walk and fresh air. That's the kind of exercise and appreciation of the moment I can relate to, personally. Thank you, again, Ms. Winters, for an enjoyable read ;) less
