review 1: An Open-Letter to Edgar Allan PoeDear Mr. Poe,I know you probably have a lot of high school students writing to you, complaining about finding symbolism in The Raven or examining the psychology of the narrators in The Black Cat and The Tell Tale Heart. Don't worry. I'm not writing to complain about those things. In fact, I'm more than happy to do them. I just wanted to request a small thing of you: break down your paragraphs. A paragraph that is a page long is frightening, especially when it comes to your prose. Everything else I don't mind. With this I am also sending you a collection of Sherlock Holmes stories. You might recognize a few things: the use of someone other than the detective as the narrator, the observation of small details to solve crimes, a long drawn-out ... moreexplanation at the end of the stories, etc. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle did borrow a bit from you, but he managed to do something you couldn't: breathe life into his detective. There is a reason everyone my age is watching Sherlock and not Dupin. Dupin is not a dynamic character. There is nothing interesting about him. You don't let us know him, and it's clear you didn't put too much time into him. S0 yes, you do get mentioned on Gilmore Girls, and I'm sure a movie was made about your life at some point, but you don't have any work on popular TV. You should watch Sherlock. You'd like it.Best wishes,Lola
review 2: The Mystery of Marie Rogêt is the second of Poe's three detective stories featuring C. Auguste Dupin, and is often subtitled A Sequel to "The Murders in the Rue Morgue". Poe's detective character C. Auguste Dupin and his associate the unnamed narrator undertake the unsolved murder of a perfume shop employee Marie Rogêt who’s body is discovered in the river Seine. The media take a keen interest in the mystery when the Parisian police fail to establish any leads to the murderer, and when tabloid speculation reaches its height the famous detective is called in to assist. Dupins analytical skills helpI found it long, tedious, and boring, which is such a shame because I really did try to enjoy it. I am a huge fan of Poe’s works that I have read so far and I do understand what he was striving for with this story. This is the first murder mystery based on the details of a real crime, the murder of Mary Cecilia Rogers of New York City. Poe changed names and places, in many ways reminiscent to the TV show Criminal minds and the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU) who profile the criminal rather than the crime itself. The detective who solves cases from newspaper articles, police statements and sometimes second-hand accounts without ever visiting the crime scenes himself, was aiming at the fantastical mind of Dupins analytical power. However this did not translate this way to me and it felt more like I was reading about a man who was reading the papers. I am in no ways saying this to disparage Poe’s work, it is a magnificent piece of work and gave rise to a whole school of detective fiction novels, but it lacked sprit and I found it exceedingly difficult to absorb. less

It should have been an essay, not a story. Anyways, its a good read.

Fails to live up to Murders in the Rue Morgue.

I liked his approach on detective work.
