review 1: This book is more complex than first glances would suggest. It is at once campy and poignant, while following the lifelong friendship of "The Supremes," a group of women who grow up together in a small town. Each woman, of course, has her own struggles, but they are not presented in a cliché or overly sentimental way. Parts of this book were laugh-out-loud funny, while others were quite raw. Yes, this is a short, easy, fun read on some levels. But it is also has a very real, somewhat deeper feel to it as well. Any woman who has ever shared that strong connection with her friends will feel the connection between these ladies. This has turned out to be one of my surprise favorites of the year!
review 2: Oh my goodness! I loved this book so much. The “
... moreSupremes” of the title are three women: Odette, Clarice, and Barbara Jean, who got the name (and their own table at Earl’s) as teenagers who always were together. The book takes them from young girls to middle age, dealing with death, infidelity, alcoholism, racism, and a host of other issues. Odette sometimes talks to the dead, including her deceased mother, and the ghost of Eleanor Roosevelt, and, no, that isn’t as weird as it sounds! Good, solid writing, interesting characters, people you feel like you know – or you’d like to – adds up to a good read for me. less
