review 1: Barely a Lady had all the rich promises of being one of those unforgettable historical romance novels, but sadly this didn't live up to its expectations. There was drama, romance, mystery, adventure, and a bit of amnesia thrown into the mix but it all built up to nothing. More than half the book takes place in Brussels with Jack lying in bed unable to remember anything. Olivia had all this energy and rage built up inside of her, it would have been glorious-her explosion. But even that was stolen. It never happened. She was a sore disappointment. Where's the backbone? How does she accept Jack so quickly after all that? Okay, if not for her but for Jamie. Think of all that heR baby suffered; not being able to know his father, being kept from his mother. He deserved so much m... moreore than what Olivia had thrown Jack. There was no exploding scene where she rages at him for everything. Nope, all that comes down to is the last couple pages where she coolly explains to him what'd happened in the last five years, Jack's begging for forgiveness, and Olivia jumping right back into his arms. Yeah, I get it she loved him-still loves him. But I don't know, maybe this shouldn't have been so rushed. All that build up was long and tedious and grew boring. And when it came time for the climax-it was nothing. It was like a deflated balloon. Her story, her past all of it would have been great if only the author had executed it the correct way. The dialogue was terrible, the characters held a lot of promise. But in the end nothing came to fulfillment. The plot was disappointing, the romance even more so, and there was no adventure (unless you count a five minute scuffle and a fire). Everything was lined up-the plot was interesting. So many promises. But in the end they were broken. And don't get me started on all the confusion this novel elicited. It left me with more questions that answers. For example, Jack being a traitor but not really because he was a spy. How did he get captured? Was this before or after he was on the battlefield? How did he escape? What was going on before Chambers found him? Too many questions, not enough answers. It would have all been bearable, if the entire novel hadn't been hinging on those answers. And the answers that were given were barely explained. Forget Jack's confusion over his amnesia, I was the one trying to fit together the jagged pieces of these haphazard events.
review 2: So hard to rate. Excellent writing skills. I enjoyed reading her prose. But the characters - Jack is a mean, immature, shallow, selfish ass and never really redeemed himself for me. I would have been happier if he had been killed off, and that's pretty sad. Olivia was too much of a martyr - after all he did to her, the fact that she forgave him at all was very unrealistic to me. I wished she had ended up with someone else. Oh, and let's not forget the omnipotent villain, who got away with murder, and his two sadistic sidekicks - they made my stomach turn. I like my happy endings, and that's my personal preference right now. I don't hold the author responsible for giving me one, but this book was so frustrating that I only finished it to see Jack grovel, and that wasn't even satisfying. Overall, I did not enjoy this book, and looking ahead to the next two books in the series, they seem to feature more mean jerks as heroes, so I won't be reading them. Is there a do not read shelf? I have heard good things about her books in other genres, such as romantic suspense, so I may give them a try, as she is a very good writer. less
