review 1: I had a heck of a time getting through this book. I literally had to force myself to stay with it. I found the first half very confusing ( so many characters to keep track of.) The second half of the book went much more quickly and the pieces finally fell into place. But it was a long and exhaustive process to finish this book. Not one I can really recommend , although it is exceptionally well written.
review 2: 2013 Man Booker Prize. Historical fiction; sex, drugs, and murder in 19th-century New Zealand gold rush town. This is some 800 pages long, but I could read a few pages here and there and not have trouble getting back into the story, so I was able to actually finish it without skimming, eventually--a complex plotline that was interesting and accessible t... moreo a reader that would not otherwise have pursued it. less
