review 1: When I dislike a book I always try to give it a chance in the hope it will get better, that chance is 100 pages. I gave this book 130 pages worth of my time before I gave up. The synopsis was interesting, the characters were not, and the novel's structure was too unnecessarily confusing. I would appreciate such a structure if there was some mystery in the story but there wasn't, there wasn't even a great deal of plot. One positive thing I can't deny is she writes beautifully.
review 2: How to write a review of this book? I didn't understand it, I don't know if I liked it, and I don't know what I'm missing out on that other people have clearly loved. I'm not saying it wasn't well written, I'm not saying it wasn't clever, I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it. But was... more it actually any good? I really don't know! I am left with images from the novel floating in my head like the coloured blobs you see inside when you suddenly turn out a light, and a horrible suspicion that maybe the emperor wasn't wearing any clothes. less
