review 1: Although at first disappointed by this well reviewed and well hyped book, all along I did admire the author's portrayal of childhood friendships, time and place, and the disappointed lives of the characters, evoking the reader's emotional response while writing unemotionally. Then for me the last few pages packed a wallop. One friend thought the translation was poor, not sure I agree, it seems true to the style. Bravo Ferrante!
review 2: I heard two people on XM talking about this series and how amazing it is. I have a feeling the book will resonate with me, no in a month or so, I'll pick up the second book in the series. We grow up with two little girls in Naples, learning about the dynamics of their neighborhood; seeing friendships change. A lot happen... mores, yet nothing major happens. In a week, if I'm still thinking about the characters, I'll know I need to keep reading. less
