review 1: There aren't many superlatives that haven't been used to describe Ferrante's writing. The internal dialogue is ferocious. The visceral response this stuff elicits in me is interesting. I already believe women are impressive, but this stuff is devastating to my 49 year old male brain. It also, I believe, paints a good picture of not just some of the European political turmoil of the time, but of the nascence of the "women's movement" and the effect it had on the lives of Italian women of different social strata. Anyway..my feeble look at a great book. Can't wait for number 4!
review 2: I would have given the trilogy 5 stars, but I was disappointed in the ending of this third book. But I have hope for the narrator in book four, which is supposed to be under
... moreway. I found these books "immersive" - I mean I dove in and read all three in the space of a week. I definitely recommend the mysterious Ferrante for winter reading - you'll be glad it's cold outside and you can stay in and read about Naples. The translator was awarded a prize for her work, and I am sure it is well deserved. less
