L'amica geniale
review 1: Novel about two young girls growing up in a poor neighborhood of Naples during the 60s. (This is the first of a trilogy that follows this friendship through decades and I'm looking forward to reading the other two.) Ferrante does a wonderful job setting the scene of a neighborhood where family rivalries could dangerously explode, keeping generations in an illiterate web of gossip, superstition and struggle. The brilliant friend in this story seems destined to escape, but only the next book will tell.
review 2: I loved this novel. Elana and Lila especially but even minor characters create a world of a small Italian village, of the choices of girls and boys in a tight knit, restraining culture, of how they use their brilliance, of envy and competition--complex
... moreand beautiful storytelling that made me think, feel and be sad and encouraged, both. I read this on the beach in Puerto Vallarta and it enriched me and my time immensely. less
