review 1: I never would have picked this up but it came from, as they say, an erudite friend. She knows her stuff. And was right on with this. The story is simple, two girls growing up in a village outside of Naples. The writing is so damn good and wow, a lot of emotion. There's no epic, sweeping plot but following the day to day life and changes in the girls and their friendship keep you from putting it down.
review 2: Easily the best thing I've read in a while. A subtle and evocative story of friendship, and class, and so so so much else, set in 1950s Naples. Utterly transporting, even though nothing much happens -- there's so much drama in the everyday here, and also so much universality in an entirely foreign world. In short, Exhibit A for Why I Read. I'm taking a br... moreeak before I go back for the next two in the trilogy, but only because I want to savor it. less
