review 1: The plot may have been a bit corny - take two sisters, one cranky and the other super nice, running a farm in Texas, add in an ex-step-sister they haven't seen in 20 years who is being pursued in connection with a crime in New York - plus a pre-teen daughter going thru normal 12-year-old struggles while also coping with a mother who has had cancer - plus several unhappy love affairs and marriages (I don't think there was a single happy marriage in the book, but there were plenty of unhappy ones!) - and add every possible cornball expression and small-town stereotype you can think of, and it sounds like a recipe for failure. But somehow Elizabeth Bass has taken all these ingredients and created a wonderful and beautiful story of love between sisters, between mother and chil... mored, and between people who appear to not even like each other very much. I feel like I know these characters, even the minor ones, because of the great character development. And while some of the plot lines may have been pretty predictable, the way they were handled really drew me in and made me care about the outcomes for the characters. There was a lot of humor along with plenty of heart-wrenching moments. All in all, a very satisfying and enjoyable novel.
review 2: I was trying to decide between 2 or 3 stars. When I found out it was the authors first novel I ended up going with 3 stars. I was really torn, the book was well written yet the story was slow, yet a little sensationalized. I know, completely contradictory. Any way even though the main character Laura made me laugh quite a bit, I just couldn't quite connect with her. I wanted to like her but she was just so mean. The whole time I wanted her to make the connection that her little neice was the same age as her step-sister Heidi was when she was completely torturing her. Yes, the book was well written but the story was lacking for me. less
