review 1: I wanted to like this more, this was my intro to Bear and I know she is an icon in the genre. Plus the idea of epic fantasy rooted in Mongolian mythology really intrigued me. The language is absolutely stellar, full of poetic prose and rich vocabulary that you want to savor and remember. But the plot and the pacing felled me. I didn't quite follow many of the complex mythologies and lineages that seemed to only appear once, then disappear without any effect on plot or even character. There were several backstories that I felt must bear fruit in later books, but they failed to hook here. I'm obviously missing something, but I was reading solely for the language, and not for story, and I like my books to marry both.

... morery wandered a bit, but then I realized that it is the first book of a trilogy, so Bear is just laying pipe and probably (hopefully) it will all come to fruition in future volumes. I love her writing. it's lovely and breezy and elegant, and yet not overblown. I listened to the audiobook and am not thrilled with the narrator that was chosen, but she did not noticeably detract from the story so I can live with her. Second volume is on its way and I cannot wait to dive into it. less

Fantasy at its best in a non-Western setting. If you like fantasy tropes, this book is not for you.
