review 1: The lush prose sinks you viscerally into the locales visited, without becoming a distraction from the story's plot lines. More revelations about the characters you love already, and more hardships for them, as well, are balanced by some small triumphs and a few "growing pains" by characters that--you can just see it!--will become important for their survival later as well as now. Not a "fast read," but something to sink into and savor.
review 2: I like how this book picked right up with the story of the first book. So many series rely on long references and flashbacks in case a reader has not read the previous work. I think it may be the publishers who influence this common "stand alone" style. There is a lot of journeying throughout this story which continues ... moreto build an understanding of the world. By the end of this book I can list at least eight characters, on the good side, who are well known and endearing. It shows good writing to have so many important characters without creating confusion. I can't wait to start book three. less
