review 1: did not expect to be so gripped by whatever happened to John Emmett. I thought we were winding down around 335 pages or so, but the plot picked up. I found myself enjoying the characters, booing the bad guys, cheering on the conscientious friend, wondering whatever was going on with the sister, and smiling whenever Charlie appeared at just the right moment. In spite of a very painful topic, the balance wasn't so gruesome that I had to stop reading. Wonderful book to escape from today and let wash over you. I like the way this author writes!
