review 1: I was keen to read this after I really enjoyed her first novel the Return of Captain John Emmett and I was not disappointed. Another beautiful book, brilliantly constructed plot, thrilling and compulsive. I've seen reviews complaining that the start is slow but this, to me, is symbolic of what's happening in the story and it only further highlights the breathless revelations later in the book. Well drawn characters and the period is well researched. Wonderful, and as a writer, envious.
review 2: I enjoyed reading this book, although I hadn't read the first book about the main character, Laurence. It was easy enough to pick up and get the gist of his history and motivations. The writing definitely takes you back to upper-middle class society in England following
... more WWI, so if you're hankering for a period mystery, this book is perfect. There are really several smaller mysteries woven throughout the narrative to keep you on your toes. Get a cup of tea ready when you start reading, and you'll be set. less
