review 1: This book has had a lot of negative reviews for a particular reason that I won't get into because spoilers, but I found I didn't mind all that.My main complaint is that that book ran a little further afield of the romantic involvement between the main characters than I like. It was necessary to the plot, but my personal preference is that one third of the book is not spent with the main characters having no contact whatsoever.I liked it, but it is not my favourite.
review 2: This is not an ordinary regency romance novel. It isn't all fun and laughter and banter untill the H/H finally resolve all obstacles and marry. Therefore I had some trouble rating it. I decided to rate it on my expectations getting into it: as in reading a typical romance novel: hence the 3
... more stars. In this story they marry in the beginning and from then on it becomes more frustrating by the minute because everything that can go wrong for the two does go terribly and terribly wrong up to a point where I almost couldn't stand it anymore. Overall I enjoyed this story a lot although it was more of a drama; not my usuall pick in a romance and not what I expected from miss James, but: well done !!It was like a book in 3 parts: (spoilers ahead) before they split up; when they were apart and finally when they were in the same country again. The first and last part were the best. The middle was the part where I skipped a few pages. I guess miss James found it necessary to follow them through their choices and to make the last part more meaningful. What would have made a 5 star story? If Theo would have really become a self asured adult that had risen out of the ashes.Theo could have found a replacement for James in the 7 years he was away. Probably not to the point where she would have had sex, but up to the point that she would have when James was declared dead. That wat he would have had to woo her when he got back; really work for it. I thought Theo made it too easy for the pirate to be her hero again. Theo should have really turned into a beauty. Now it is a little doubtfull whether or not the ton really thinks her beautiful and Theo herself sure doesn't think she is a beauty. The contrast miss James chose is to let him physically change a lot and give him a tattoo to make him more ugly to the standards of the ton thereby making her more beautiful in comparison. I would have liked that she changed on the outside as well. She was very young when they married. She could have easily gone more curvy in her mid-twenties. I know it is a superficial whish as in true beauty lies within, but hey, this is suposed to be a Fairytale... less

3.5 stars. Re-telling of "the Ugly Duckling" as a Regency Romance. Works a treat!
