Raiders' Ransom
review 1: 3.5 starsIn a post-apocalyptic world, it is the 23rd century, and Lilly Melkun, a fisher, lives in a world where much of England is underwater. She lives a simple life, her and her seacat, until the day raiders attack. Her village blamed for the deed and for the kidnapping of the Prime Minister’s daughter, Lilly sets sail to pay the ransom and to prove her people’s innocence. What she didn’t count on was running into Zeph, the son of the Angel Isling’s Boss—the very raiders who attacked her town. Zeph just wants to prove himself to his father and the other raiders. Can Lilly outwit him and the rest of the raiders to bring the Prime Minister’s daughter home safe? Or will Zeph be her downfall? And will she be his?The first three-quarters of this book was a quick ... moreread. I felt as if the story slowed down in the end, though, and I was growing kind of bored with it because it was the same situation happening over and over again, and I just wanted Lilly and Zeph to sort it out already. Speaking of the two of them, the synopsis of this book made it sound like there was one main character, and not two. So, when Zeph was introduced, I was very confused. It doesn’t help that this book is told in first person and there was nothing to warn me I was switching to somebody else. And even after I figured out there was two different characters, the switch wasn’t always clear, and it caused a little bit of confusion.Though, I did love Lilly’s and Zeph’s voices. Even though I confused them some of the time, there were other times I could tell instantly whose head I was in just based on the way they told the story and the way they spoke of others. I don’t think this story would have worked as well without switching between them, because there is both truth through the way they see the world, and lies. This book teaches the lesson of looking through another’s eyes without ever once being obvious about it and that there is a lot of gray in the world we think is black and white. The present tense took a little getting used to, because not many people write that way, but once you’re engaged in the story, it does help to make things seem a little more immediate.Overall, I enjoyed it enough I’ll probably read the sequel, but not so much I have to get the next book right away.
review 2: In a harsh version of 22nd century, where England is mostly flooded and technology has collapsed, Lilly Melkun ekes out a living as a fisher. Coming home one day from sea, she finds her village was attacked by the savage Raiders, and her Grandma killed in the process. To make matters even dire, the Prime Minister blames Lilly's village for not fighting back and preventing the abduction of his daughter who was in town during the Raiders' rampage. He has ordered able bodied villagers, including her best friend Andy, to join the militia for the pursuit and rescue of his daughter. He further threatens the villagers with punishments if her daughter is not retrieved. Determined to help, Lilly pretends to be a boy and steals the jewel from the Prime Minister's sister-- a talking jewel that the Raiders are after. Hoping she gets the chance to deliver the ransom and save the day before she is discovered, Lilly heads off to Raiders territory and lives the adventure of her lifetime.Lilly's plight mixes up with one of the raiders, Zeph, and his welcome voice in the story gives depth to the "villanous" raiders. Zeph turns out to be Lilly's unexpected ally. Will they both succeed in their mission and keep the fragile trust between them, or are they too much a world apart to keep their friendship? With fast paced action and just the right amount of suspense, Raiders Ransom has a lot of twists and turns to entertain a reader till the end. less
