review 1: I was a skeptic at first, while getting into this book. Honestly because, the thought of reading from the perspective of an wlederly woman, didn't thrill me that much. However, Emma Healey does a lot more than that. She lets you into Maud's world, and uses great storytelling to make you live the main character's Dimentia-plagued life, as she absent-mindedly searches for someone who she thoroughly believes is missing. I can only sum this book up as thrilling, eerie, and unsettling.
review 2: Maud is old with dementia. She finds half of a compact in her friend Elizabeth's yard and she's reminded of her sister's disappearance after WWII. She knows they are tied together but getting her thoughts together (she writes notes) and convincing her daughter CG is tough.
... moreI loved how the writer merged between present and a thought/remembrance that started her re-telling a past story: Her newly married older sister Sukey goes missing. Her husband is kinda shady and is suspected but no body is ever found. Maybe Sukey just disappeared like a lot of other women (war brides) did at that time. Young Maud investigates as well as she can--picks up bits and pieces and collects them--could be clues. Finally the daughter thinks she understands and is so frustrated she goes to Elizabeth's and digs up where Maud had found the compact. They find Sukey's body after all these years. It is why "summer squash" kept popping up--the husband "helped" plant the squash in order to avoid digging in the area of the body. Poor Maud but the mystery is finally solved. less

I loved this book! It was so moving, and I can only imagine that it must have been frustrating to write. I plan to look up if this was born through the Author's memory oh her Grandmother. The reason for it not getting 5/5 would be based solely on the ending - I think I didn't want it to end, and therefore found it was wrapped up too easily. For a debut novel it was so very well polished, and held my attention completely for the full duration. I look forward to reading more from this author.
