The Baskerville Affair
review 1: This last book in the Baskerville Affair series was the most action packed and the least annoying in terms of the characters. The whole love triangle thing is definitely gone and Evelina is not quite as stupid as she was in the second book. I thought it a little annoying that no one really seems to die and stay dead in this series, people are constantly coming back from the dead. The only other thing that I didn't really enjoy was the magical aspect of the series. I would have preferred more steampunk stuff and less magic but both things seemed to work together. This book was like the other two in that it seemed to drag on and on and never end. This one wasn't so noticeable because it was a little more action-y than the others but it still was a really long read. Ove... morerall I will rate this book and the whole series with a 3.5 star rating. It has a good story, characters and the book is really well written. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys long books about magic and steampunk.
review 2: Excellent steampunk adventure, I loved it! In the conclusion to the Baskerville Affair series, things are coming to a head with the Baskerville rebellion, Evelina is feeling somewhat defeated because her efforts to save Nick by agreeing to work for the Gold King didn’t work out the way she hoped, and her friend Imogene’s soul seems to be missing as she lies in a comatose state. As the story progresses, we learn more about the participants in the rebellion, as the steam barons begin amassing their forces to fight the rebels as well as each other for total control. I loved the side story involving Imogene’s efforts to fight free from the prison her insane sister has trapped her consciousness in as well, since although her body was weak, her will was very strong and in that situation that’s what counted. Evelina has a key role to play with her ability to infuse the rebel machines with her magic and her uncle Sherlock Holmes helps to free her from the Gold King’s clutches, only to have her fall into hands of the evil Dr. Magnus. I enjoyed the resolution of that encounter as well as the final epic resolution of the rebellion. There was plenty of nail biting suspense and exciting action involving all of the fantastical battle machines, mysterious underground denizens and Niccolo’s wonderful sentient airship. Although in battles not everyone will survive and there are sacrifices to be made, I thought the way the story ended was perfect. Even though I hated to say goodbye to all of these entertaining characters, including Imogene’s sister Poppy, I have to admit that the story had reached a logical conclusion. I look forward to seeing what this author comes up with next; I know I’ll be eager to read it. less
