review 1: I struggled with this because I simply loathed the heroine; a wonderful literary portrayal of a spoilt brat who just made me want to say stop being so self centred and give her a good slap. The language was lyrical and beautiful but I felt it was overloaded by being so descriptive, making the minds eye overload with images, it seemed impossible to enjoy an image conjured before another one was thrown in. The ending was weak and the plot light and I felt for the father he had lost two women in his life and such a vile daughter. I doubt if I’ll attempt another book by this author.
review 2: This book started off very slow and I almost gave up several times but I wanted to know what the "life-shattering secret" was. Too bad it took 250 pages in to have it re
... morevealed! Once the revelation took place, the book was practically over and the ending felt rushed. The book had a poetic feel at times with MANY descriptions of the Hungarian countryside which meant a lot of skimming pages. That being said, the story does have some good elements (how memories affect us, should we always tell the truth, the need for forgiveness to heal ourselves)and because of this, it was an okay summer read. less

Beautifully written. The descriptions of places made you feel you were really there.

While I enjoyed this book I wasn't transported or deeply involved in the story.
