review 1: A group of adventurers chase an alien artifact, only to be recruited by government and sent after a long lost colony ship. A mediocre start of plot quickly turns into a cliche ridden story. Almost all of the characters are developed weakly, to the point of making it impossible for the reader to feel connected to any of them. The plot has some weak points, existence of powerful entities that are able to control thousands of people from light years away but could not eradicate a few hundred rebels on their home planet being the most obvious one.
review 2: Excellent space opera that introduces a new world and sets off an epic adventure, but it still works as a stand alone novel. The tone is brisk and action-packed without being simple-minded and there's plenty of
... moreimaginative alien species to encounter. If Ed Carew is at first a bit too talented and smug, by the end he's developed into a more flawed, likeable character. His pilot Lania is enticing character from the get-go however. Definitely interested to find out what happens in the next Weird Space novel. less

Reads like the outline for a Tom Cruise screenplay. Not my cup of tea.
