review 1: Movie was on Sy-Fy again recently, and decided to pick up the book, thinking the movie was based on it. Turns out the author has a post-script explaining how they both came about, both based on the same short story, but the screenplay was finished and going through the Hollywood ringer before he ever completed the book, which was sort of a revisionist view of the plot.It is both more satisfying and complicated and annoying than the movie. Remy has 5 ex-wives. Jake is mostly a background character. Bonnie is much more competent, active and thoughtful. The ending is different. It still reads like a movie, and even though I'm still annoyed that such a good concept, with great actors turned into a cheap mess, I like the concept. (Though I did keep having weird operatic flashba... morecks to "Repo the Genetic Opera"- but that's a whole 'nother kettle of fish.)
review 2: I read a different edition to the one pictured - a Scribe Australia one I picked up for $3.99 on a bargain table. The central idea was very clever and explored in an interesting way, but by the middle of the novel I seemed to be slogging through endless small flashbacks explaining the history of the main character. It really slowed the flow down and I found eventually I'd lost interest in the overall plotline. Having moved on to reading Chandler and Thompson in the last few weeks I've sadly abandoned this one, almost exactly halfway through. less
