review 1: Giving this a 5, though it's one of those times I wish I could select a 9 out of 10. It was a bit all over the place to be a 5, but it's just too deep and dark and thought provoking to be a mere 4 (often what I rank really good pleasure reads - and this is more than that). It's often funny and always clever. The characters and their scenarios are very real...and their own self-realization is sometimes contagious. I've spent a couple days thinking and digesting, and decided that the lack of a clear, singular theme bothered me a litte, but that I couldn't drop it to a 4 based on lack of theme. In fact, if there's a problem, it's that there are too many poignant themes. Those themes stem from many different characters and view points...and I suppose that it's the develo... morepment of those characters, their lives and their outlooks that make it such a compelling read.Of course, it helped a lot that the setting was Los Angeles County in the mid '80's. What fun flashbacks!
review 2: Don't miss out on this family novel of misunderstandings, misinterpretations, miscommunications, mistakes, and missed opportunities. While there are larger themes here where we could toss around things like "the American Dream" and whatnot, I prefer the smaller familial and friend interactions as they show how hard it is sometimes to get it right, this social animal stuff. Of course, being fiction, the problems and challenges here are outsized, but so is the heart. My favorite bit was the oldest son getting into punk and wanting to be a bad boy and how chagrined he was that his dad liked his band, liked the Circle Jerks, and let him smoke and stuff. Hard to revel when dad thinks it's cool, man. less
