review 1: I had to read this book for my book club, and did not like it at all. The characters are under developed, and the only one who is somewhat developed is not even the main character. From the beginning, everything was set up to go his way, and he seems to be absolutely flawless, which is highly unrealistic. His mother is naive, which doesn't make sense because she is the police chief, and giving the farm girl a daycare job? Seriously? How much more stereotypical could you get? The dialogue was bland, and the action was low. While I think focusing on our extreme reliance on computers and the mob mentality was interesting, I think it was not well executed.
review 2: What a disappointment. The premise of the story was good but the execution was very unsatisfying. I ... morethink the biggest problem for me, besides the awkward dialogue, the flaws in science, the tacked on love interest that went nowhere, the all too perfect Herb character who was NEVER WRONG ABOUT ANYTHING, was the fact that the landmarks placed this story just outside of Toronto Ontario Canada -roughly Mississauga/Halton but it was portrayed as taking place somewhere in America. Nothing against the US, but if you place a story in a country, don't use road names and neighbourhoods that actually exist in another. It's just...I don't know...lazy, pandering to a larger sales audience, un patriotic...? The woman at Chapters who recommended this book to me was so proud that he was practically a local author. I feel like he cheated us by placing the story outside of Canada. That said, the writing style was not my favourite and overall I found this book to be a chore to read. Not at all impressed. :-(( less
