review 1: This book is hard to read because it is dealing with a serious topic, but it is so capturing and fast read becasue it is so well-written. As a reader, you are both amused and repulsed because the main character is very humorous (I think you have to read it in Danish to understand this, unless it is really well translated) but the events are hard-breaking and revolting. I strongly recommend this book.
review 2: I have always thought that danish literature was sadly bad. I can understand that this view comes from my own personally experience with literature from middle-school and high-school. The literature was boring and served nothing as food for exam. However, as time goes by and one's own view on the world expands from the limited one in school to outside th
... moree school one begins to see why teachers made their choices of literature. Suddenly everything makes sense...or at least that is how the fairy tale goes. I realized that despite my growth I still thought much of the danish literature was bad but of course that might also be because I read the mainstream. When one becomes so blinded by literature from school one usually keeps a negative view on literature. Literature and books becomes boring areas that you would rather avoid than putting even a toe on it. In my case it wasn't literature in general that was affected but danish literature as a whole. It is sad because one risk avoiding brilliant literature and if there is something I would like to avoid then it is avoiding avoiding literature. So when I started on ”Kunsten at græde i kor” my expectations were quite low. Also considering that the book has become a danish movie arose my suspicion since I have rather profound dislike of everything that says danish movie on. Fortunately, to my own surprise, the book was better than I had expected. Unfortunately, the feeling and opinion was only temporary. I liked the way it was written. It was humorous and full of the absurdities an 11 year old boy's misunderstandings can give you. But it lacked structure and often it made use of cliches and strange choices by the characters. The plot was full of holes and the story was very unfocused. I got the sense that the author wasn't sure why he wrote this. This seemed to be clear when I realized that the description on the back cover of my edition was very vague and to some degree even misguiding. I can understand that the story is tragicomedy. However, the story fails to deliver any sort meaning and essentially the story only appealed as good simply because it was written in a very fun and brilliant way. It is a shame because I think the author was on to something good but lost track of the purpose of his writing. “Kunsten at græde i kor” ends up being a simple average story that is only lifted by the great narration that Erling Jepsen is in the possession of. The plot though is easily read and easily forgotten. less

Had to read this in school, but I was NOT my "first choice" if I could decide.

Rigtig god, godt skrevet og en spændende men barsk historie. Kan anbefales.
