review 1: I received this book as a First Reads win from Goodreads.com. Contrary to many other reviews I really enjoyed this novel and found it fascinating. I, however, have never read any other books about Catherine the Great. I found Ms. Stachniak's fictional retelling of Catherine's recollections of her life original and interesting. Her choice to focus on Catherine's love life and relationships lead to me wanting to learn more about the empress which is was reading is all about, right? I rather enjoyed this novel and recommend it to lovers of historical fiction.
review 2: Compared to the Winter Palace, this book was a bit of a disappointment. I found the narration tedious and I was truly looking forward to reading about Catherine's reign as Empress; there was t
... moreoo much emphasis on her love life. I did find the sections about her relationships, hopes, and aspirations for her grandchildren to be more interesting. The book attempts to tell the story of Catherine the Great, from her arrival in Russia as Sophie of Anhalt-Zerbst through her journey to her deathbed. I am, however, keen to read a true historical book on Catherine the Great as she has been dubbed a female leader of a behemoth stature -on my to read list. less

Apparently the only noteworthy thing Catherine the Great did was sleep around.

I enjoyed this in parts, but it just seemed to drag a bit for my taste.
