review 1: I found this to be an enjoyable book. The writing style was pleasant to read, the heroin was spunky, and it's set in a time period I like. The courtly intrigue and a romance budding amid Elizabethan social expectations kept me entertained. The hardships endured by Ellie because of her father's profession as an alchemist, something most frowned on or outright despised, was interesting to read about.By the end, though, it started to feel contrived. Some of the characters who went along with and supported the relationship didn't make sense to me. Their motivations to fly in the face of social norms was never explained. Despite the heroin being an intelligent and capable woman, something drilled into us and usually enjoyable to read, it's still the hero who does all the saving... more in the end. The romance sort of got cheesy. The end was not nearly as enjoyable as the beginning of the book.But I still enjoyed it, even with it's faults, and would suggest it for anyone who enjoys historical fiction with some romance.
review 2: Bland and utterly forgettable, though not horrible. I stopped 100 pages from the end and skimmed because I realized I was just wasting my time, and it was too late for it to get better. Everything about it - the characters, plot, writing quality... - is fine and passable but not great. It's not a book I want to throw across the room, but it's not a book I want to keep reading. Nothing about it is compelling. Why waste your time? There are so many better books you could read. less
