review 1: I'm usually a fan of Kellerman's Peter Decker series, but this one wss less than satisfying. The resolutions were contrived and strained. I understand that Kellerman wants us to see Decker as a complete rounded character, so the family scenes are important to her, but the gratuitous teenage sex didn't really add anything valuable to the book. Only near the end, when there is suddenly real danger for some of Decker's team, did the book pull me in completely, and then suddenly it's the next day and everyone is fine. I was frequently bored with this one. It starts well enough with a full grown tiger at the scene of a homicide, but do I really care that the ex-wife of the deceased wore red boots to his funeral? Or what color pants Marge Dunn wore each... more day?
review 2: A comfortable mystery in that it includes my favorite reoccurring Faye Kellerman characters - Peter, Marge, Oliver, and Gabe. It even throws in the Alex Delaware character from her husband's novels. I still miss the old books of Faye Kellerman that concentrate more on the relationship between Peter and his Orthodox wife, Rina, as she helps him to solve crimes in her own perceptive way. In The Beast, an eccentric multimillionaire is found dead in a small apartment while his pet tiger and unusual reptiles reside. Peter Decker follows the twisted path to catch the killer. less
