review 1: "Blindman's Bluff" by Faye Kellerman is book 18 of the Rina Lazarus/Peter Decker series. It's a reasonably good Jewish murder mystery but the characters are getting a little long in the tooth. And other than mentioning the occasional conflict between modernity and Orthodox Judaism and a good suggestion for baking challah bread, the Jewish aspects of the novel are muted. The story: A mass killing has occurred on a rich family's estate and the prime suspects are naturally the sons who are also part owners of the family businesses. With the death of the parents, the sons stand to make a lot of money. But two of the guards are missing and as the police search for them a blindman overhears a conversation in Spanish and realizes that what he overheard could get him killed.Any pro... moreblems with the story? Well... they curse a lot more than I like. The violence is not too bad but it does exist. And it uses terms that seem odd to me like a white person is trying to describe how Mexicans are and almost gets it right, but occasionally the rhetoric will become disharmonious. (It doesn't sound right.)The ending is OK. It gets very exciting, and then the excitement drops off suddenly. We find out who masterminded the murders, but the motivations are only guessed at. That is a fine ending and probably realistic in the sense that a detective never really has all the questions answered. I suppose I was hoping for a Scooby Doo ending with the dramatic reveal at the end. Silly of me. I know.
review 2: #18 in the Peter Decker / Rina Lazarus mystery series. Peter converted to Judaism after meeting Rina Lazarus, they eventually marries and keep an Orthodox Jewish lifestyle to which Peter has been able to accommodate the demands of being an LAPD Homicide lieutenant. Both were previously married and the series with its mentions of their merged family, his, hers and theirs is dependably enjoyable.Peter Decker / Rina Lazarus mystery - Decker is investigating multiple killings at the ranch of a family involved in real estate development. Additional attacks on other family members increase the suspects and obscure the motive. Rina is on jury duty and becomes involved in Peter's case through contact with a blind court interpreter. less

What to say about a book that ends with the phrase, "it was really nice"? Other than that it shouldn't be taken as a descriptor of the quality of the book. A detective who drives a Porsche - it was like reading a screenplay for a 1980s/90s action film. The plot was ok, not particularly gripping. The dialogue was wooden. And I really can't figure out why the author felt the need to describe the detectives' outfits when they appeared in the story, other than perhaps the author has an interest in fashion so thought she'd weave it in, but it was awkward and didn't seem at all necessary as part of the story.
