review 1: The most interesting part of this book for me was learning about Canada’s Duplessis Orphans. Canada, in conjunction with the Catholic Church, began a program in the 1940s and lasting into the 1960s of labeling orphans as mentally ill for monetary reasons (the per diem was higher was those deemed mentally ill and there was no requirement to educate). This historical background combined with advances in neuroscience re deep brain stimulation that were also part of the story could have combined into something thrilling. But I didn’t quite buy into the characters and their motivations and the glossing over of the nature of schizophrenia in an intimate relationship. Maybe something was lost in translation? Interesting but not gripping.
review 2: Normally I
... more don't bother reading books in a series if I haven't read the first one - but holy cow was this worth it! Though it says that it is the 3rd book in the series, you don't need to read the first two to be able to follow along. This was spectacularly creepy, creep-tastic even! The kind of book that will give you chills and leave you unable to put it down. It does get a little graphic, but if you don't mind shows like Bones or Castle, you should be able to handle this. I would definitely check out the rest of the books in this series - I hope I get the chance to read them!! less

This book had it's ups and downs. Sometimes it was really, really good. Sometimes it was dumb.
