review 1: Fun, steampunk fantasy setting, reminded me a lot of Howl's Moving Castle. Relatedly, I think it would do very well as a movie adaptation. It was a bit too YA for my taste, the characters and political intrigue both fairly simplistic. I *did* really like the mathematical angle on the magic though - there's a scene early on where the protagonist uses a combination of magic and trigonometry to determine the precise height of a structure, which she needs to know for another spell.
review 2: I really wavered between two and three stars for this one. I really liked the characters and the story but the pace was VERY slow. Way too much detail. Do we really need to know about what she ate at every single meal, every time she visited the water closet and every time she
... more nodded off at her desk? She is the most powerful wizard ever and blushes every time a man pays attention to her? Don't think so... Also the world building was totally confusing. Donuts and take out coffee mixed in with dirigibles devices, ancient magic and powerful artifacts, talking plants with genius IQ, convenient "portals" to circumvent three hour traffic jams with horse drawn carriages, chain mail armor with swords and cross bows, AND modern plumbing and magic mobile phones? Too much. less

Lovely. It took me about half the book to get into it but eventually very much enjoyed it.
