review 1: Long, but enjoyable. Hard to keep track of all the characters, but after awhile you begin to understand it doesn't matter--each story, even if it's only a few paragraphs long, is strong enough to stand on its own. Each character, however briefly he or she appears, is fully described. It's a book that takes its time, not one to be rushed, and not a compilation of easy philosophical truths. Slow going and carefully layered for a deeper understanding of what it is to be human, to fail, to lose everything one loves, to re-emerge, and not infrequently, to give up. A good, solid read.
review 2: Often i read a book and afterwards cant remember what its about. sometimes in a long book i dont remember all ive read so far! kudos to this author for basically summing up wh
... moreat had gone so far on pages 358 and 568. Author for the modern distracted mind. This has so much true history mixed with fantastical stories, I found myself often turning to the Internet to see who actually existed. The great uncle who tells Ari the Spinoza story is a Zelig who interacts with Hitler and plays chess with Stalin. His forefathers are in the right place at the right time to help tell the story of Spinoza. And the exiled of life itself is a real book. May try to read it!!! less

Another great romp through history, as seen through the Spinoza family. I really enjoyed this book.

A dense literary read, but worth it. Recommended by a review at Bookslut.
