review 1: I received this book as a gift and was intrigued by it. It turned out to be a really good read. The novel is based in the late 1950 when The Party has taken over China. The story follows the lives of a family in China over the course of a few months. Tao's father has been arrested and is in a reeducation camp. His mother must keep the family together and works as an herbalist. Tao's grandfather seems "under the weather" and no one knows why. Then a young pregnant teenager shows up and stays with them as well. I don't want to ruin the story. It is not a fast-paced action story but still well-written and I really loved it!
review 2: I very sweet, short read. This was a book club book. I really enjoyed it and zoomed right through it. I think I wanted more out o
... moref the ending but also it ended realistically. It is a story about how family's let daily life slip through their fingers, how family isn't just about blood but a bond of kinship, a story about faith and forgiveness. I think it will make a good discussion. The story moves at an even pace without a big climax but it still works. I don't think this will be the kind of book that stays with me a long time but I also enjoyed the story. less

Sadly, it was a little boring. I like this author but I kept waiting for something to happen.

Enjoyed it so much! Mao era, but different. Not so many of the cruel details.
