review 1: Very good stuff here. I've seen in several organizations I've worked with the importance of appreciation, so the emphasis on that resonated with me. The authors go further, digging into the different kinds of appreciation that people, well, appreciate. The work draws from Chapman's work on the "love languages," but applies it to a professional setting--really, any setting that involves a number of other people--a business, a non-profit, a volunteer organization, a church, a school... just about anywhere, because groups thrive on positive interactions like appreciation. Besides spoken words (which I suppose is one of the most obvious ways to show appreciation), they talk about tangible gifts, quality time together, acts of service, and physical touch. Even aside from going ... morethrough the process of identifying your own and the appreciation languages of others, it can be useful just to understand the concept, to perhaps offer appreciation in a number of different ways. They also make the point that appreciation is different than praise that's tied to a particular project that's been completed or a particular act that a person has carried out. Those things can prompt us to show appreciation, but appreciation really speaks to something deeper than just thanking someone for something he or she has done--it's ultimately more about who the person is, and appreciating the person in that sense.
review 2: At first, I felt that the idea of five love languages sounded lame. But I came to accept it after the people around me started to use it as a framework for talking about the ways we relate to each other. Oh. kay. Then I got this book as a gift and read it in one sitting. When applied to work, suffice to say, most of it makes sense. The idea that people preferred to be shown appreciation in different ways makes sense to me, as compared to mass appreciation activities. less
