review 1: As always, Maddie has a propensity for finding dead bodies, and then wanting to hunt down the culprit herself. But, in this book, more so than any other, I was thinking - what are you doing, Maddie? You are expecting, you shouldn't be trying to track down a murderer! One thing that I also didn't like about the book was the design of the book itself. The others in the series that I read were mass market paperbacks, and decently designed, but this one seemed really cheap, and the text wasn't even justified. I hate reading text when it isn't justified!
review 2: This book featured an interesting change for Maddie, as she was pregnant and had little to no idea about how to plan for a baby, while also trying to solve a murder so her best friend could live with
... moreher movie-star boyfriend in peace. This was one of the few times that Maddie actually investigates a murder for Dawn's sake - the murder took place at a club, the club is partly owned by Dawn's boyfriend, Ricky, and if the club doesn't re-open and start making money soon, Ricky will end up making more Moonlight movies (he's essentially the Robert Pattinson of this novel world), and those movies involve Ricky spending all his time with a gorgeous actress and not Dawn. The case is also a bit personal because Maddie had threatened the victim about half an hour before her death, due to the pregnancy hormones. So this book involves Maddie and Dawn and Marco investigating a world full of fake vampire parties and blackmail until they find the killer, occasionally crossing paths with Maddie's husband, Jack, who is less than pleased that his pregnant wife is trying to solve a murder. This book wasn't bad, but overall, the series isn't really anything that I would feel the need to read more than once (which means they'll never really get higher than three stars from me). I liked the plotline of Maddie and Jack having a baby, as it creates all sorts of entertaining chaos in her life. It was nice that she agreed to solve the case for Dawn as opposed to having to solve it for herself, as she often does in the books... But it was still your basic mystery book with an unsurprising ending. I enjoyed the side plots about the characters much more than I did the plot about them actually solving the murder. less

Maybe it's that I've read all of the high heels books to date. Maybe it's that I'm starting to get into the mind of an amateur sleuth (ha! right!), or maybe Gemma Halliday is getting predictable (unlikely), but I knew who the killer was about halfway through. Regardless, I really enjoyed this installment of the High Heels books. I think Maddie continued to be fun, and her pregnancy added something to stories. Her mother and Mrs. Rosenblatt were especially insane over it (although, I think it would be fun to see Maddie's mom and Ramirez's mom in cahoots over something, or even see the relationship between Maddie and her mother-in-law).Halliday did get in on the Twi-hard vampire craze, but I was so relieved when it turned out to be (much like an episode of "Castle") something that seemed a bit more surreal than it really was. There's an explanation for EVERYTHING! Loved that about it.I will continue reading the "High Heels" books for as long as Gemma Halliday continues writing them. I really love them. They're so much fun.

Fluffy book. An easy read. Kinda similar to the Stephanie Plum books.
