review 1: I didn't have much exposure to the Boxer Rebellion whilst going through school, so this was a very interesting read. I really liked how the main character called upon these beautifully-drawn incarnations of Chinese mythology to lead his rebels. It lent a surreal metaphorical image to the rebels' rationale.Yang's story strikes that perfect balance of characterization in which we can understand our main character's perspective, but we also see him commit some pretty terrifying acts of violence. In the end, this story shows how easily people who mean well but lack understanding can end up causing a storm of tragedy.
review 2: I'd like to be able to review this book with Saints, but I guess they are categorized as stand alone books. Boxers was really a nicely d
... moreone book. It connects political, cultural, spiritual, and cultural underpinnings to what spawned the Boxer Rebellion. And Yang tells really a story of how when integrity is sacrificed, tragedy abounds. I think for me I just can't stomach stories about war. It is so senseless, the loss of life and destruction of everyone's way of life. All the nationalism and moral fervor just makes me sick to my stomach. And the burning of books? Oh, I can't hold it together. less

One of the best books I've read in my life. See my review of the second half: Saints. A must read.
