review 1: As another reviewer said, this book is a fantastic prose poem. It is more of a series of short vignettes that tells a cohesive story than a traditional novel, and the themes of hope and loss in an environment constantly torn by war and conflict come through far better in this narrative structure than in many other books that deal with the same subject. It (thankfully) avoids many of the normal steampunk tropes, and Valentine is an accomplished writer to tie everything together so elegantly. I look forward to her next works.
review 2: This is a curious magical tale evoking beauty and terror set within a landscape of destruction. Desperate people come to the circus, where the ringmaster, who holds some power over death, can replace their bones with copper tubes
... moreand gears. It is a mesmerizing read, set in a timeless place where wings are made from the bones of the circus artistes. The book is written from different perspectives and from different times and as they weave together a narrative arises from the rubble and bones. Probably not to be recommended to patrons who prefer a more straightforward story. less

Very strange, very lyrical. Intoxicating. Disturbing. Hard to put down.
