review 1: I just feel kind of meh after reading this. It was pretty fun at times, but didn't leave a very lasting impression. The characters weren't very likable for the most part, even as children. I felt bad for how much I didn't like them, but Billy comes off as a tool, not a victim of the foster system. Then there are the adults. They just don't make sense. The Wizard really had been searching for millennia and never realized people aren't purely good? And way to give up on your beliefs in like 3 seconds. Plus Black Adam isn't very interesting as a villain. He really is a psycho, but is never played up that way. Then there is the uniquely frustrating side story about the rich dude that is just unbelievable and driven by lack of communication. The art is decent, but looks...unimp... moreressive in ways. Gary Frank is good, but there are too many lines on some of the faces. And I don't get the costume design for Shazam. It looks really similar to Wonder Woman's material. If there's a connection that might be cool, but for now it's just more lines. He's also got a knack for making everyone look smug, and the body proportions are weird at times, even for comic books. If this has always been Shazam's origin story, I can give a little slack, but it definitely would have worked better back a few decades. It's serviceable, and considering it was a backup story throughout Justice League, it flows very well as a continuous volume. It would probably work well for fans of the character, but anyone else it's something that you could live without.
review 2: This is a nice reinvention of Shazam! Unlike so many of the New 52 reimaginings, this one actually feels like it has some positives over the old continuity, thanks to the new family that Johns has created for Billy (though I don't have any hope of seeing them much, because New-52-House-Style places so little importance on supporting cast). The last few issues, where everything comes together, are particularly strong. This isn't in the same class as some of the atypical superhero comics that have appeared in recent years like FF and Hawkeye, but it's nonetheless a very strong, imaginative superhero story. less

An honorable, respectful, well-written reboot of an old, old character.

It's like "Big" plus "The Goonies" plus "Indiana Jones".
