review 1: Although Blackest Night was purely just all out action, I simply loved it. It was a fun ride of non stop undead goodness. I mean who wouldn't want to read about zombie heroes? After re-reading it again in preparation for this series, I was all up to speed. But don't let that fool you, there are many mysteries happening here. The world is recovering from the events of Blackest Night, especially for the 12 people resurrected by the White Lantern. Why were they brought back? Why weren't others brought back as well? These are just some of the big questions on all their minds, and the adventure is just starting. The story focuses mainly on Deadman, Hawk & Dove, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman & Mera, Hawkman & Hawkgirl and Firestorm. Previously I have not read much of Martian Manhunt... moreer and Firestorm, and even less of Hawk & Dove, but I'm really enjoying the depth that they are going into each characters story. This volume doesn't answer many questions of what's going on, but it's building some great suspense. Johns and Tomasi do an excellent job at writing a book that has you asking a million questions, but answering very few, all whilst keeping you hooked. The art by Ivan Reis is once again on top form, proving why he is one of my favourite artists in conics today. The colours and expressions are absolutely breathtaking. Whether you enjoyed Blackest Night or not, this is far removed from the feel that book has. A great read and I'm itching to get into volume 2!
review 2: Brightest Day picks up at the end of Blackest Night, with the 12 resurrected heroed/villains now back alive and wondering what to do. Of the 12, this volume focuses on Deadman, Aquaman, Hawkman/Hawkgirl, Martian Manhunter, and Firestorm. Prof Zoom, Max Lord, Capt. Boomerang don't have much to do with the story here; nor do Jade and Osiris. Hawk will end up being involved, but more peripherally.I imagine you can find out what the other people do in other titles Brightest Day versions (Green Lantern only appears briefly, and Flash even less than that. Each of Deadman, Aquaman, Hawkman/girl, Martian Manhunter and Firestorm is sent on a sort of spiritual quest? I suppose you could call it that, or I guess an attempt to understand why they've been given a new chance at life, and what their role will be in living again.Deadman is wearing the White Lantern Ring when he awakens, the only one the 12 to still have it on. This will factor majorly into the storyline.Deadman crosses paths with Dove, hence Hawk's involvement, and that will set us off on our journey. In many ways this is a story about redemption and second chances, overcoming obstacles, and involves facing their worst enemies. Can't give away much more than that but to say that there's a lot of battles.Strong start to the Event. less

Kind of confusing story. They should have combined both volumes.
