Weekend Wines

The first weekend of 2018 was celebrated with great friends and equally great drinks.

Friday night was get-together-night and I shared a meal with no fewer than 3 South Africa winemakers.  Needless to say there were many liquid options. I remember the following wines that I drank with braaied chicken and summer salad:

  • Ataraxia Sauvignon Blanc from Hemel-en-Aarde.  A good-looking good tasting Sauvignon Blanc.
  • Benguela Cove’s Sauvignon Blanc with a freshly pressed label.  The first Benguela Sauvie produced  by winemaker Johan Fourie.  I loved the new label as I did the wine.  Classic label with crisp and elegant content.
  • Strandveld First Sighting Shiraz.  The winemaker Conrad Vlok is a nice guy so I expected a nice tasting Shiraz and was not disappointed by this Elim red.
  • Hermanuspietersfontein Skoonma.  Shiraz driven with Viognier, Grenache and Mourvedre.  Reliable as ever.
  • La Vierge Seduction Pinot Noir.  There just had to be a Pinot Noir somewhere.  This is Hermanus after all.

Rise and shine on Saturday… After the ParkRun and a quick coffee at Hermanuspietersfontein Saturday market I took a #shotleft to Creation with 2 of my Paarl friends.  It was to be a first for them.  I ordered the charcuterie pairing option.  As per usual it was a memorable experience.  The wines that stood out are:

  • Creation Reserve Merlot
  • Creation Syrah Grenache
  • Creation Cabernet Sauvignon/Merlot/Petit Verdot

Saturday afternoon was gin time.  A local gin from Stanford was mixed with a plump cherry, watermelon pieces and a slice of cucumber to produce a fresh sundowner.  The Dragonfly craft gin is made by Misty Mountains situated between Hermanus and Stanford.  A tuna steak seared on the grill was served with Creation Chardonnay for the ultimate Saturday evening combo.

Sunday’s steak matched with Beyerskloof Pinotage which came at a great price complements of Checkers.  The curtain call was sushi with Ataraxia Sauvignon Blanc. Enough Enough…
