review 1: Ginny is a lovable red headed kindergartener that walks to the beat of her own drum. She enjoys her class activities. Ginny handles herself well even when her classmates giggle at her when she bumps into a chair or cuts too many bunny ears. She tries not to let her peers get to her, when they point out her flaws. The nurse’s voice was gentle. “Do you see two?” Ginny nodded. Ginny thought everyone could see two of everything, just like she did. She felt sad when she realized there was something wrong with her eyes. Ginny went to see an optometrist who explained why she was seeing double. The doctor gave Ginny an eye patch and reassurance that her vision would improve with time. With a newspaper hat and an eye patch, Ginny became, “The Pirate of Kindergarte... moren”. The quality of this story written by George Ella Lyon was enjoyable. The story was fun and fast passed. I liked how a young reader could relate to Ginny and learn a lesson on going to the optometrist. I fell in love with the illustrations of a cute red-headed little girl, dressed as a pirate. This is a great book for children ages 4-6. The combination of bright colorful illustrations and adventurous kindergarten experience was wonderful.
review 2: Ginny loved to read, except for the fact that the words, letters, and numbers would always jump all over the page, making it difficult for her to read. She thought that all kids saw things like this. Even Ginny's teacher didn't know what was wrong with her. She just thought that Ginny was reading things twice just because she wanted to or that she was squinting just to be funny. Until vision check day at school. Ginny could read the eye chart just fine with one eye closed but when it came time for her to read the chart with both eyes, Ginny once again saw double. The nurse told the teacher and Ginny that she had double vision and Ginny began to cry. However, the nurse told her not to worry because the eye doctor could fi her right up. When Ginny's mom took her to the eye doctor, he gave her some glasses and an eye patch. Ginny was just fine with this and called herself the "Pirate of Kindergarten". Now Ginny was able to only see one of everything and could read just fine. She also did not knock down the chairs when it came time to go to reading circle, or make three-eared bunnies and the kids didn't laugh at her anymore. I think that Lyon did an amazing job at showing kids that not everyone can read or see perfectly. She showed them ways be positive about being different, by saying that Ginny called herself the Pirate of Kindergarten when she had to wear her eye patch. Some kids would be so petrified by having to wear something that made them look different so if they read this book then hopefully they would look at it in a positive way and think that they are the coolest kid in kindergarten. Even though the story was great, I thought that the way the words and pictures were on the pages were kind of busy and that is why I gave it a 4 out of 5 stars. less
