review 1: This story is about a girl named Ginny who was a kindergartner that loved to read. She saw two of everything which made reading, cutting and even getting around the classroom more difficult. She was often teased by her peers and talked to by her teacher for some of her "behaviors" such as reading with her noise in the book. One day they had a vision hearing at school and it was discovered that Ginny had double vision. She was given an eye patch by the doctor and she was able to use scissors and read without a problem. This is a story that can be beneficial for all students to hear. Whether they have a vision problem or maybe they are just going through a vision screening at school, all students will be able to relate to this book. This book also lends itself well to... more discussing bullying with students, by allowing them to put themselves in another person's shoes. The pictures in this book make the text come to life. They truly show the way that someone with double vision views the world.
review 2: As a Kindergarten teacher, I was very excited to read this title and much to my joy it was a wonderful read. The Pirate of Kindergarten hits on the top of disability with authenticity. Lynne Avril's illustrations help Kindergarteners without vision issues to empathize with Ginny's journey. Lyon's writing is great for lessons around predicting and inferring. work to use the clues in the text and pictures to discover what might be happening to Ginny. This relatable character resonated with my students and I look forward to reading this text to Kindergarteners for years to come. Additionally, we utilize this text to analyze character development. My students were excited to re-read the story and map how Ginny evolved extrinsically and intrinsically through the text. This text fits perfectly within the realm of critical literacy. Children are launched into a discussion of the treatment of Ginny and how Ginny was enhanced and also hurt by the actions of the people who surrounded her. This text is a great companion to a text set on exceptionality and disability, it is seamlessly incorporated into critical literacy lessons as well as traditional comprehension focused read alouds. less
