review 1: I really enjoy historical fiction and this one was very good. It is written from the perspective of Bethia Mayfield, living on Martha's Vineyard in the mid-1600's and chronicles her friendship with a native boy. We get a glimpse of the life of women, the tension between the English and the natives, the general social structure of the colonies and missionaries. The title comes not only from the crossing of Caleb to the English ways but of assisting Caleb in his crossing into death. Well written and recommended.
review 2: Although I'm not a big fan of historical fiction, I found this novel exceptionally engaging. Told by the friend who started the title character on his crossing(s), the narrative is full of lush detail but not overburdened by it. Pictures are qui
... moreckly painted as background to the story and serve to bring it alive. The characters are believable and, for the most part, grow out of any possible stereotypes in very satisfactory ways. Many of them are quite endearing and none without warts. Perhaps best of all is that the racism of the time (fairly early Colonial New England) is presented straightforwardly but without whitewashing. It plays a major part in the story but is not the central topic. I highly recommend this book and will look for others by this author. less
