review 1: I'm starting to fear this serie's end. Right now I want another 10 books, and of the books I have already read I would definitely buy this one. I don't have a good feeling about the end, I don't know why. As the other books this one too has a sense of fatality, it reveals the depth of Kyle and John relationship, how much they changed and how somehow they remained the same as they were.[POSSIBLE SPOILERS IF YOU HAVEN'T READ THE OTHER BOOKS]As John is now nearly invincible, Kyle is still just a human and he will grow old while his lover won't. So I fear these endings: 1. They both die.2.John commits suicide when Kyle dies.3.They somehow return to Earth and there John becames a normal human being so they can have a natural death.4.John will have to deal with the inevitable de... moreath of Kyle but we will never actually read of that part because the author prefers to let us imagine it and didn't write a conclusive end. There are other predictable endings, such as the one in which they both live forever since Kyle is bound to John through blood and this somehow infects him with immortality, or Kyle's reincarnation.[END OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS]I don't really know what kind of end I hope to read, so the only thing I can do now is go ahead and trust this author's cleverness.
review 2: Extraordinarily gifted plotting. Imaginative world-building. Restrained, mature writing. Thoughtful character development. To say it's all masterfully done is not an exaggeration. As innovative and competent as Catch-22 and The God Of Small Things were in their own path-breaking ways. The Rifter series is rather unique classic fantasy in its own right, and if you're lurking about, waiting for it all to become available before you dip your toe -- really, rethink that. Run, don't walk. Get these books and read along, you won't be sorry. It's a remarkable event, this, not the kind of opportunity that comes along too often. You'll appreciate the time between the installments. It does incite one to re-read feverishly, hoping to remember what and why and when and who.Ginn Hale has a very unique style, a restrained, sophisticated viewpoint that will never have you gagging on the sappy or the overly sentimental, never indulge in sophomoric wish fulfilment or cliched overwriting. This is not a review. This isn't even an opinion. This is merely encouragement to get off the fence, stop dillydallying and read this series, if you are at all interested in great fantasy with touching m/m romance thrown in. This is not a book that can be discussed in isolation -- it's part of a series, and it's also not a book that can be discussed without spoilers. Well, you can, but you'd be missing so much of the best things about it! For an in-depth discussion of the story, visit her forums. This is me saying "run, don't walk." You're missing something truly wonderful, otherwise. less

Can't put this series down. I'm worried about Basawar Withdrawal Syndrome when I finish it!

Another good installment. Plot moved. Definitely prefer the brooding Kahlil to Ravishan.
