review 1: As far as I know, there's only one left after this one and it seems like there's still too much left to fill in. Maybe the last one's just super long? We'll see.Anyway, this one is back to John's pov. It includes the start of the war and John coming into his power and fame. On the one hand, it's fun watching John being godly and all; on the other hand, it does really take a lot of the tension out when you know that he can be shot up and cut to shreds etc. with no lasting negative effects. On the third hand, thanks to Kyle's pov, we already know he lives so it's not like that's in doubt anyway. On the fourth hand, John being a god incarnate kinda reduces the conflict/plot to John just being powerful and there's not much interesting in how things are resolved.I suppose that'... mores probably why the twenty some years between the start of the war and Kyle's pov are going to be skipped, since there's not really any drama in this conflict. There were some interesting things in this installment: Hann'yu coming back briefly, Suiman and Fenn, John exploring his rifterness some more and people finally realizing it. Also, the writing did a good job of making it feel like a lot was coming to a head and this war was breaking out on a big scale. And as part of a whole story this installment was necessary, but since it's split into parts I'll rate them as parts, and this one was less satisfying because of the lack of John/Kyle togetherness, the repetitiveness of combat (John is stabbed, powers up, kills people) and lack of reasoning behind the Payshmura's actions. (I felt like John in that what they were doing didn't make any sense of what we had known of them. I understand the need for a tipping point to make John fully against them, but this seemed extreme and unjustified.)Lastly, I thought the fact that Ginn Hale thought of including the bit about the guys being astonished that John was circumcised amusing. Sure it makes sense that could be a thing that would happen, but who would think of including it?
review 2: I debated a while over how to rate this installment. I liked the action, which was nonstop, for the most part. The story was well-written and progressed nicely. However, I'm still not completely invested in this "back story." Unless there's going to be some time causality loop weirdness that causes the past to change, we know how this all ends. I'd like to see more of what happens with Kyle's timeline. Just my preference. less

I can't believe there is only one more book to go. So much more still needs to happen.

Part 9 is fantastic. No time or patience to write a better review. Gotta read part 10.
