Garrett Files
review 1: I still like this series, but they have grown darker. Our hero spends most of the book taking care of his best-friend who've been gravely wounded and he spends most of the book coordinating friends as they pull on various threads of the mystery. Unlike other such series, where the characters never age Garrett and colleagues are growing both more mature and older. This makes for a more serious book than you might expect from a fantasy adventure series.
review 2: The Garrett novels are good as standalone novels, but part of the charm of the series is that the characters and back stories do accumulate over time. This book has that in spades. Though it was a review of this particular book that got me started on the series, I'm glad that I didn't read it until I'd
... more read many of the previous books -- the back story is more important to this one than to most of the rest, not because of how it affects the plot, but because of how it affects the overall context. Garrett and his friends are getting older (and perhaps even acting mature), and the end of this book would be a very reasonable place to retire Garrett. Of course, I hope that more Garrett books come along! It would be a pity to have Garrett retire just because he's finally grown up... less
