review 1: I was very interested in reading this book to try and get a better understanding of what exactly is the common core curriculum. The first half of the book discusses the general problems with education (teacher tenure, teacher unions, school boards etc) and how detrimental those are to the quality of education that is provided. Being a former school teacher, and having lots of family members who work in school administration, I have to agree with Glen Beck on his assessments there. Tenure, unions, barriers to entry, etc. have done major damage to our school system. The second part of the book starts to discuss common core and more of how it was passed through political back channels. I agree this is deplorable use of our political process and it shouldn't have happened that... more way. But I felt that Beck failed to give common core curriculum a real evaluation. There are defiantly some things that I don't agree with and our potentially scary. But, in reviewing my kids school work (he is in kindergarten) and listening to family members who currently work in education who have good things to say about common core, I haven't found anything, at this point, that is so detrimental to our kids. I guess I was mostly disappointed in the book because I was hoping for more detailed analysis on the curriculum itself. I would give the book 3.5 stars. Minus one for the annoying writing style and voice. But, I did appreciate the detailed history and information in the first part of the book.
review 2: Have another book ready to counter the frustration of how corrupt our education system is. Excellent reading and insightful. Beck is a little crazy sometimes but his books bring up issues that everyone else turns a blind eye to. He also calls out both sides, no party loyalties purely based on the R or D in front of a politician's name. I've been digging deeper into the American school system and this book is an excellent addition on the topic. less
